Gallows in the Grassmarket

Our charming building sits in Edinburgh’s historic Grassmarket – once a space where farmers brought their hay and other produce to sell - and while you might not guess it from the warm atmosphere in the pub today, our history is somewhat macabre…

During the 18th century, the area around our building was also home to one of the city’s main gallows, with crowds regularly gathering to watch public executions. Rumour has it that our pub is where men who had been sentenced were taken for their last meal while the gallows across the road were prepared for them. As they left the pub, they were given one last whisky, referred to as ‘one for the road’.

Our name, The Last Drop, refers to the last hanging held in the Grassmarket in 1864. Today, though, the crowds only gather for our famous warm welcome and enticing food and drinks menu.
