A fascinating past
You will find the cosy, welcoming Red Lion within a stone's throw of the Chester Cross, Chester Cathedral and a fascinating city which was originally founded as a fort by the Romans in AD79.
In 1792 the Chester Directory records around 140 inns in the town and by 1858, local author Thomas Hughes recorded 36 trading in Northgate Street alone, describing them ""as plentiful as blackberries"". Rumour has it Chester once had one pub for every day of the year.
With so many ale houses and over 2000 years of well documented city history it is not surprising that Chester claims its fair share of ghost stories, including the title of the most haunted City. The Red Lion, the most popular alehouse name in the UK, was built in around 1600. Notable by its black and white style of the Tudor period it adds its own story of a haunted cellar, a tale emphatically retold by a previous landlady.
