Nicholson's Pubs

Welcome to Doggett's Coat and Badge, your local pub in London

A name as unique as our pub

We’re often asked why we’re called ‘Doggett’s Coat and Badge’.

Well, it’s a fascinating story. The name pays tribute to Thomas Doggett, the organiser of the London Bridge to Chelsea rowing race along the Thames, which is said to be the oldest continuous sporting event in the UK.

First held in 1715, the race takes place in July each year and runs over four miles and seven furlongs. The winner of the boat race would be awarded a waterman’s coat and badge, hence the name ‘Doggett’s Coat and Badge’.

When Doggett died in 1721, he left instructions in his will for the race to be carried on by The Fishmongers’ Company, and it still is today. Our pub sits along the course of the race in South Bank, so we felt it only right that we named it after its founder.

Nicholson’s Pubs are known for their individual style, exciting stories, and charming personalities — and Doggett’s Coat and Badge is certainly no exception.

Our visitors are often fascinated by our unusual name, and the story behind it doesn’t disappoint. The pub is named after Thomas Doggett, the organiser of the London Bridge to Chelsea rowing race (Oxford-Cambridge) along the Thames. Winners of the boat race would be awarded a coat and badge — hence “Doggett’s Coat and Badge”.

So, as you enjoy the views from here across the river to St Paul’s, the Old Bailey, Shell Mex House, Somerset House and much of central London, why not get a drink and enjoy a little living of your own?
