A unique city centre pub with a rich history

Nicholson’s Pubs are known for their individual style, exciting stories, and charming personalities — and Williamson’s Tavern is certainly no exception.

Said to hold the oldest excise licence in the City, our original tavern has a distinguished history. We were originally a residence for the Lord Mayors of London, and William III and Mary dined here. The original pub dates to the 17th Century, not long after the Great Fire of London. We were rebuilt in the 1930s, and our 'new' interior reflects the style of that period.

The Williamsons Tavern is the age-old haunt of locals, city-workers and tourists lucky enough to stumble upon it. A lucky few may even bear witness to the ghost of Martha, a poltergeist whose very presence has lead to police dogs growling as they pass the end of the lane, and flat out refuse to come closer.

A curiosity regarding the apparition is furthered by the fact that there’s no painting to be found of Martha in the building at all. However, the longer serving members of staff have all recalled seeing the same dark painting in different parts of the pub.
