Old Wellington, Manchester

The oldest building of its kind in Manchester

Built in 1552, The Old Wellington is the oldest building of its kind in Manchester. Once home to some of the founders of Manchester commerce, the people behind the city’s first bank, and the cotton industry, it’s safe to say that our pub has witnessed Manchester’s fascinating history first hand.

Originally built next to the Market Square, in 1554 the building became part of a draper’s shop owned by the Byrom family. In the 17th century, a third storey was added, and in 1830, the building finally became a licensed public house. The rest, as they say, is history.

Did you know our building was moved in 1998? The half-timbered, Grade II listed building was completely dismantled and moved around 100m from its original site during a redevelopment programme.

A unique city centre pub with a rich history

Nicholson’s Pubs are known for their individual style, exciting stories, and charming personalities — and The Old Wellington is certainly no exception.

A scheduled ancient monument, The Old Wellington was once home to some of the founders of Manchester commerce, the people behind its first bank, its first quay and the cotton industry.

Built in 1552, The Old Wellington is the oldest building of its kind in Manchester. Originally built next to the Market Square on what is now Market Street, our half-timbered and traditional building was moved 100m from its original site in a redevelopment programme in 1998.

Nicknamed ‘The Old Welly’, our pub became part of Draper’s Shop in 1554 and was the family home of the Byrom family. It was John Byrom, born here in 1692, who invented an early form of shorthand. Our building half-timbered traditional building was moved 100m from its original site in a redevelopment programme in 1998.
