Autumn’s here and so is our annual Cask Ale Festival at The Conan Doyle! And this year there’s even more for you to discover.
We’ve partnered with 5 fantastic British breweries, including the likes of Stewart Brewing, Black Sheep, St Austell, Wild Beer Co. and Five Points to showcase their very own cask ales. There are over 30 new ales that are perfect for sipping on this autumn!
From Monday 16th September - Sunday 27th October, we’ll be taking your taste buds on an expedition through an array of exciting ales from up and down the country. The Cask Master within each of our pubs has curated their own range of ales for the festival, from pale to amber, reds and IPA, all the way to bitter, brown ales and stouts — there’s something for everyone to try.
We’ll also be hosting ‘Meet The Brewer’ events, as well as food & beer pairing evenings — get in touch with your local to find out what events are happening near you.
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave Theakstons. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery from reclaimed equipment in the very same town, Masham, North Yorkshire.
Set in an old maltings overlooking the town, the brewery was built using brewing kit sourced from old breweries plus a lot of heart and soul. The very same equipment is still used to this day, brewing some of your favourite Black Sheep beers that are available across the nation.
Black Sheep’s award-winning range of beers is an eclectic mix of classic and modern styles as they continue to champion innovation whilst staying true to their traditional roots.
St Austell Brewery has been brewing beer in Cornwall since 1851. Fast forward 168 years and while traditional brewing techniques remain, innovation, passion and craftsmanship continue to evolve.
The business, one of the oldest in the county, is still independent and family-owned. Its range of award-winning beers, which are expertly brewed, bottled and barreled in Cornwall, exert flavour and character.
Best known for its flagship brand Tribute Cornish Pale Ale – first brewed 20 years ago - St Austell Brewery crafts its quality beers in some of the most advanced facilities in the country. The skilled brewing team – led by Brewing Director, Roger Ryman, since 1999 - brings together the very best Cornish ingredients wherever possible. Partnerships with local barley growers, and relationships with specialist hop growers across the world means St Austell Brewery can continue to brew new flavours and beer styles that delight.
Nicholson’s work with St Austell to brew our Nicholson’s Pale Ale all year round and regularly collaborate with them for exclusive seasonal releases. This autumn we have brewed Flanker and Firkin, a Sorachi Ace-hopped Red Ale for the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
The Five Points Brewing Company is an independent brewery based in Hackney, London, brewing with a commitment to quality and the community since 2013. Their brewery and barrel ageing room are based in Victorian railway arches underneath Hackney Downs railway station and it’s here that they make the most of every inch of space to house their 32 hectolitre brewhouse, packaging plant and barrel ageing store.
Championing flavour, provenance, consistency and quality, their range of award-winning beers are unfiltered and unpasteurised for a better flavour and aroma.
Five Points are committed to the local and wider community – the first brewery in the UK to be an accredited Living Wage Employer. All their electricity is sourced from 100% renewable sources and they’ve helped to establish an apprenticeship scheme for training brewers.
The Wild Beer Co was founded by a Californian chef turned-brewer, an Englishman, and a desire to challenge the perceptions of beer. Born in 2012 out of a love of wild-fermentation, barrel-ageing and most importantly, flavour. Their beers are brewed using modern creative techniques and ingredients while producing some of the world’s oldest beer styles.
Set against the backdrop of the Somerset countryside, Wild Beer are a true farmhouse brewery sharing their space with Westcombe Dairy. Quality is everything; from the fresh spring water used from the local countryside, to specialty malts, experimental hops, wild yeasts, and a huge array of exceptional ingredients.
Founded in 2004, Stewart Brewing quickly established itself as one of Scotland's most successful and reputable breweries, producing and pioneering numerous award winning beers.
Over the years, they have continued to innovate and develop, whilst upholding the traditional ethos of Edinburgh's rich brewing history. What started off as Steve and his homebrew kit, has transformed into a purpose built, state of the art brewery. At the 2017 Scottish Beer Awards, founder Steve was named ‘Master Brewer of the Year’, which was followed by being crowned ‘Brewery of the Year’ the following year.
