SUPPORTING THE RNLI — HELPING THEM TO HELP YOU

Established in 1824, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s brave lifeboat crews, and lifeguards, have saved over 142,000 lives. The charity is dedicated to saving lives at sea courtesy of its 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue services, seasonal lifeguards, water safety education, and flood rescue response. However, despite their best efforts, every year around 190 people die in British and Irish waters — sadly, over half of those who drown never intended on entering the water initially.

On Wednesday 31st May 2018, we celebrated the official launch of the Nicholson’s and RNLI partnership with the unforgettable ‘Respect the Water’ campaign at our Horniman at Hay’s pub. Our event hosted a buzzing atmosphere, tasting sessions, and insightful interviews with the operational crew.

Ross MacLeod, who is the Coastal Safety Manager from RNLI said that: "Through our Respect the Water campaign, we’re trying to change people’s behaviours to make them think about safety and take steps to safeguard themselves and others. The phrase ‘prevention is better than cure’ rings true, and it is fantastic that such a popular chain as Nicholson’s has agreed to support us in spreading those safety messages”

The RNLI relies heavily on donations, which enables their volunteers to continue their extraordinary work to save lives at sea. We’re backing the ‘Respect the Water’ campaign, which is at the heart of the RNLI’s drowning prevention work. The campaign was created to educate and inform the wider population on water safety, with the aim of halving accidental coastal deaths by 2024.

To find out more about this initiative, you should take a look at the ‘Respect the Water’ official website, and watch the effect that falling into cold water has on the body in the ‘Float to Live’ video.
